We have been recognizing the top graduating senior in our 微生物学 BS program since 1985. In 2018, the award was renamed the Berdell 芬克卓越奖章 in 微生物学 to honor our longtime colleague and friend.
Dr. 凡克 was a professor in our department from 1964 to 1997. He taught several courses throughout his career, including Introductory 微生物学, 普通微生物学, 土壤微生物学, 病原细菌学, 食物及奶类微生物学, 和临床寄生虫学. He also had a research program focused on nitrogen-fixing soil microbes. 然而,博士. 凡克 is probably best known as a co-author of the #1 bestselling microbiology textbook, 微生物学: An Introduction. Since its first publication in 1982, 微生物学: An Introduction has been used by more than one million undergraduate students of microbiology. It has been translated into more than twelve languages and is currently in its thirteenth edition. Dr. 凡克 remained a steadfast friend of our department until his death in 2020, visiting every week to talk about microbiology and life. Dr. 凡克 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by NDSU in 2019.
The Berdell 芬克卓越奖章 in 微生物学 is awarded to a graduating senior in the 微生物学 BS program who best exemplifies the spirit and character of Dr. 凡克. Selected by the 微生物科学 faculty, the winner will excel in academics, contribute to our research and/or teaching mission, and be active in extracurricular activities.

Throughout her time at NDSU, Abigail has been actively involved in groundbreaking research. 她在Dr。.
